well, i have self diagnosed myself as being dyslexic, i have always had problems with spelling and reading, i can read perfectly with my minds eye, but start to stutter and skip lines if i read out aloud, i was terrible at school, found it hard to understand teachers or books.

I always did well in subjects like chemistry, Craft design technology, and IT.
I was facsinated with computing and software;

i failed uni, college, school but some how managed to get a job as a telesale asistant, they had a really terrible excel solution where i quickly learned and re-wrote the application in Visual basic and access.

I was stated as being a genious, that was the first positive remark in my life, since then i purchased many books, and studied programming, and to this day i am writing software, previously and currently have worked and am working for a large multi-national company as a solutions architect / developer.

I have discovered i have an ablity to solve problems at different level, the developers around me in the same company seem to drop out from the development arena as soon as i start to create amazing solutions to problems.

I guess i found my vocation.
Dyslexic people do have a gift.

Im currently in my 3rd year at university. Ive recently been diagnosed with Dyslexia so decided to do my dissertation on this area.

My dissertation question is? Do computer programs designed for dyslexic children improve self esteem?
Do you have any thoughts on this issue. Have you heard of any studies surrounding the above question?
By the term 'computer programs' im referring to programs on a computer that teach a dyslexic child to read, spell etc. e.g units of sound.
If you could shed some light on this issue it would be gratefully received. Parents, carers, children and young people, I would be grateful to hear all your comments about ICT and self esteem?
  • Do you think computer programs can raise self esteem?
  • Do they replace teachers?
  • Do you think dyslexic children woud prefer receiving help from teachers or the computer?
  • Which is more benefical for the child?
  • If your dyslexic or know someone who is, do you/they have low self esteem? Is this because of the dyslexia? Thanks for any help you can give me!

Hi, im not dyslexic, but i have 3 friends who are, and even though they are, that doesent stop them living a perfectly normal life. being dyslexic doesent make you any different from anybody else, everyone should be treated fairly, and i know people who get picked on because of it, but it shouldent stop you being who you want to be. p.s hi matt, even thouhg you are dyslexic, you are a good friend.

Thanks for this great site... My daughter is very thoughtful but doesn't talk much.Your site is helping me to see the world as she does. Many dyslexics seem to find romance languages difficult, but what about Asian languages?

My daughter is now in a Japanese bilingual school and thriving. I read somewhere there is no dyslexia in Japan. Don't know about that but the pictographic writing is definitely processed differently, much more easily. Congratulations and keep up the great work!

My son has had a laptop and some software including voice activated software from the CAP (Communicationas Aid Project). This equipment has transformed his life! The CAP is a government funded project to provide equipment in state schools for children and young people who have a communication problem. It has recently been extended to dyslexics. It is run through BECTA.The e-mail address for BECTA is: cap@becta.org.uk and the website is :www.becta.org.uk. I think one of the criteria may be that you have to be statemented. An application for assesssment has to be processed through your school. I know that the project did run out of money. I am not sure whether more funding is now available.

Can anyone point me in the direction of research or studues that demonstrate the benefits of using a laptop for dyslexic kids. Am about to go into battle with duaghter's school and some good hard evidence of benefits would help enormously.

I am 27 and my mum knew i was dyslexic from when i started school but my school would not admit it, i have gone through my life with very little confidence and although i am in an administration role, i feel like i am no better off now than i was at school.

My manager has tried to be helpful but hasn't got a clue and i just don't know where to turn next. i am trying to get them to put me on a course to be tested and find out what my worst and best skills are but the age old wall keeps comming up (money). i cant aford to pay for myself and they won't pull their finger out and tell me the best ways of compromising. i am very fed up in this job and am trying to find something else but there are a lot of people employers that are not prepared to take a chance on you because you are dyslexic, the thing that scares me the most is i am a mum and my daughtere will need help with her homework and i will not be able to help.

Adult Dyxlexics seam to be forgotton about, and i think its about time we were given some help too.
