Hi,
I am currently conducting research exploring the factors involved in the
recruitment and selection process for people who have dyslexia. I am looking
for adults who have dyslexia and those without to complete a short online
questionnaire looking at recruitment experiences. The findings will be
presented to Dyslexia Associations in the UK and Ireland and will hopefully
help to improve the treatment and support for people with dyslexia in the
workplace.
The survey is available on the following link: (might need to cut and paste to address bar) http://surveyor.mbs.ac.uk/ss/wsb.dll/64/Dyslexiaandrecruitment.htm I would be really grateful if you could take a few minutes to fill the questionnaire in. If you have any queries, please contact me on susie.larkin@postgrad.mbs.ac.uk. Thank you. Susie Larkin Manchester Business School Susie.larkin@postgrad.mbs.ac.uk |

I think you have done a brilliant job. Very easy to access, informed and down to earth advice etc. Well done you. I battled for my daughter (now 20) to get help and she had private tuition for 2 yrs of 1 hr a week and she managed to get 3 yrs ahead of her peers at 11. I only got accessed at uni, aged 39. I gained a 2.1 hons degree in Psychology, proves it is never to late to suceed. I am on the committee of the West Surrey dyslexic aid association and I will tell them of your amazing site. I am planning to do a talk for teachers, called The Forgotten, which tells my own story of being dyslexic and having a dyslexic daughter, how it feels to be dyslexic and how teachers can help and to promote the positive abilities of dyslexic people. We are unique. Thanks for your wonderful website and good luck for your future.

First of all, may I offer my congratulations on a great website. My wife and I have been doing a lot of internet research recently after our 9 year old son was diagnosed with dyslexia in January. In reading through many of the interesting comments here on the messageboard, I saw mention of the Nessy Learning Programme, and felt compelled to write. Our son, Nicholas, has been using this programme at school and it has done wonders for his reading, spelling and confidence. I can honestly say there is nothing else like it on the market. We've recently bought the home version, which is about Ģ20, and he can't stop playing it. It's been an absolute God-send. We see such a difference in his overall demeanour. Thanks again, Barnaby, for putting together such an interesting site. I wish you all the best and will be sure to check back often.

Why is everyone having the same battles over and over again? When are the people in the education department going to understand that these people are very clever? All they need is the correct methods of teaching! This may be slightly different but is easy to do. I have done this type of teaching within a mainstream classroom, it can be done done so why is it not happening? Someone please tell me.

I have suspected for the last few years that my 12 year old son is dyslexic.Just had year 7 parents evening and every subject teacher said he lacked concentration and wasn't putting enough work in. Gets away with writing as little as possible (his writing is very bad). Lots of other things going on as well. My problem is my son will not listen to me when I say he may have a problem and maybe we should have him assessed. He seems to think I am saying he is 'thick'. Quite the opposite - he is really bright. How do I get help for him when he is adament there is nothing wrong. I feel if I leave things as they are that I am letting him down.

Hi, hope you can help me! I am doing my university dissertation on dyslexia and if those with it can suceed in their schooling- i have discovered that most do! However one of my topics is on the dyslexics role in over coming the problem.
Do you have any tips on what children with dyslexia can do to help themselves? I have found a lot of information on what parents and teachers can do to help but none on what the child can do. Hope you have some useful information! Thank you! |

i do not think the teachers are helpful on the whole, although i have one teacher who i like because he tries to help me. It is good to read how others feel. How did you set the website up? did you do it on your own? Well done. |

i have just been told that i am dyslexic. i found it hard at school and to cope. i always found myself not being the same in learning as others. my mum had fought for me to be tested for dyslexia and finally i was tested for dyslexia in secondary. when i was 12 i was told i wasn't dyslexic but needed extra time and a lot of things had to be broken down and explained differently. this all helped and i could finally get a good run at education. i went private to get tested as there was always people asking if i was dyslexic.vwhen i started work my boss asked if i was dyslexic as her son was dyslesic and had had experience with a dyslexic and could see the signs in me. i would always ask myself if i was as i know some basic signs. i also knew that i wasn't like how everyone learned as everyone may get what to do but i didn't have a clue. i'm really glad i have finally been diagnosed and it's settled my questions. i am now at ayr college doing child care and i love it. i did get good grades at school but i reckon it was down to getting that bit of help. i want to raise the awareness now that in schools the tests are not being done properly and i want to help others who have gone through the experiences i have went through as i know i'm not the only one out there.

My son is dyslexic - his biggest issue apart from writing and spelling is that he forgets everything. He goes to seondary school soon. All the teachers agree that a laptop would be best for him but they will not let him have one as no-one else has one. They want him to use an alpha smart ( which he uses now at school) but he would not have his own and would have to ask in each class to use it. We all agree he won't do this as he is too shy and doesn't want to ask. How have people persuaded schools that a laptop is OK to use?

Having kids with dyslexia is VERY frustrating because the schools just won't acknowledge it and always mark their work as wrong when if they'd just turn the letters around to what the kids meant to write they'd see my boys are writing the correct answers in their work after all! Why can't teachers just acknowledge the dyslexia and allow for it in their marking???? I was shown quite a cool thing for remembering which way round a 'd' should go the other day.... drumstick starts with d, and if you put a drum (a circle) with a stick directly behind it (straight vertical line) you end up with a 'd'.
Ok, well I thought it was cool anyway.
Cool site! |

I feel horrible that I did not realize my son had this problem. He is an amazing athlete, and musical, however math, reading, writing and comprhension is hard. He has just turned 21 and STILL has not got his license. He is an awesome driver but can't pass the written! He gets so down on himself that he just gives it up for awhile! Now that I have been doing some research on this disability I can see why he is the way he is! Does anyone have any suggestions on how he can study for the written drivers test? It's tough for him to retain all the info. Let me know!

Hey..I found out that i was dyslexic at a young age around 8. I have a major problem with maths *BIG TIME* the numbers never seem to stick in my head and every time i use a calculator i always just guess what number seems most convincing. But i also was getting depressed a lot of the time and i was getting worried that i wouldn't do well in life and that there was no hope.
My parents did everything they could for me and i am getting better and better every day. I am doing well in english, History, R:E, Life and Work. I also do brick work at Tech as part of my GCSE. Later on i will go to tech full time and get the trade of brick work as that is my best subject. So remember just because you can't do one subject dosen't mean you cant do any other subject and be good at it.. Thx for reading. |

I am Dyslexic, recently found out 2 weeks ago. it was a relief knowing i am now labelled as that. i remember School and college years were very tough and frustrating moments for me, my essay structure, grammar was terrible. i knew the was something wrong with me just couldnt figure out what then. i simple thought i was thick, felt depressed and isolated. life was just terrible and i couldnt see no light at the end of the tunnel. since i have found out, my self esteem has been growing and i feel i am not alone or the only one. this site is good as it tells alot of peoples stories. keep up the good work

Hello this is the second time I have written its great to hear others comments and to know you are not alone.
Can any one tell me if a child with a stastement is able to take their funding out of mainstream school and us it towards private education?
We have this problem that the schools we are being ofered are either mainstream or special needs neather of which are sutable. I don't know of any moderate learning schools in the area. |

I spent many years depressed about not being about to understand parts of school. i got high enough grades to do a electrical installation course and ended up doing hardware repair in the IT support dept of the local college.
Now i support the computer usage of dyslexics, including working with demo software. it helps as i can comment on if i think the software is any good. it funny that i now work with the lecturer that supported me when i was a student there, but i have been used to show disillusioned dyslexic students what you can do. usually playing fix the pc, when she is talking to them and jump in when the moment is right. it does work. and it good to get on really well with your ex dyslexia support lecture. |

Living in new Zealand they do not recognise Dyslexia as a disability. to make things worse i am also dysgraphic which is another disability they dont recognise here. I found I had these disabilities when I was in Intermedate (year 7-8) at school. Before then was very good at maths - some of my teachers put me in the lowest class in maths as i was very slow when doing the work. I was in the lowest one in reading and when it came to writing I felt embarassed that I was that slow and i hated it when people commented on the messiness of my writing. When reading books I would not know what they were about - I would have to read it 2 or 3 times. I would quite often have tutors Spelling and I would remember words but would forget them after a moment or two. This web site really needs a spell check. At high school Year 9-13 I had tutors in english and did not try to take another langage because i was having to much trouble writing english well. In the exam I had Reader/writers with an extra half hour. I passed Year 11 and 12 but i didn't pass year 13. Well now im hoping to do a dip in early childhood education. Just that I don't have enough English credits. |

Hiya I am currently trying to do some research on how feedback and simulation impacts learning in particular that of dyslexics in an e-learning environment. I am trying to develop an e-learning package to invistigate this research area. It would be great to exchange some ideas. I am currently in my final year BSc at Brunel University. ps: keep up the good work |

Hi to all. Have been reading through the comments here recently and would like to say very well done on a great website! I just wanted to say that my husband and I were about at the end of our rope looking for books or products that would help our son, Paul, who is now 13, with his reading and spelling. I'm not here to advertise anything, but do have to say that Paul's life, all of our lives, turned around completely when his school started using a program called "Nessy". I'd never heard of it until he started talking about it on the way home. He'd been playing some of the games with his friends and it's just such a well designed thing. FINALLY a CD or whatever that REALLY appeals to kids. The games are hysterical and the graphics are the best I've seen! We've bought the version for home use and we spend hours on it. Paul loves it, and my husband (James) can't get through the Penguin level so there's a bit of competition going on at the moment, but I'll take that any day over the stress we had before. It's brought us all closer together, and I'm happier tonight as a Mum than I've been in years. The difference I see in my son today is nothing a mother describe in words. Signed, A Grateful Family! I read a message that was put up by a girl called Ruth on revison tips, also finds it hard to revise and how she hates being dyslexic. I know how you feel!!! I struggled with maths BIG TIME!!! never remembered how to find this out pressing every key on the calculator to see which number looks right! I still do find maths hard, but i have learned how to cope with those horrid numbers. When I did my GCSE's I wanted the desk to swallow me up or wished I had a brain that could solve problems and remember things. I kept looking at my books saying to myself just remember it, please. Then it comes to the exam gone and I've forgotten it. You don't need to hate being dyslexic at all. There are many ways to revise that can help you, one thing I did was to brain storm important imformation like history dates, inventores, and information. Also getting a dictaphone talking into it can help cause you can play it back to yourself and listen to information. Using high-lighters, coloured paper or card, pictures to tell the story any thing that made it fun I remembered. Hope that helps you!!! |

your site is wicked and a credit to you. i never realised i was dyslexic, at school i was always in top set in all subjects but struggled with the written sides of studying. But since i failed my 'a' levels and discovered my dyslexia i have worked hard and just got a degree! i just want people to know that you can get loads of help and support in further and higher education nowadays so go for it the skys the limit and when people say you can't just tell them where to go! |

This is an ACE site! I put a message in 4 years ago, when I was 14, because I used to run a club and newsletter for additional support needs children and I researched this site. This is a really good site and I hope that it helps dyslexic people to feel more confident about themselves. |

my question is ....My son attends a public school. He is in the 9th grade....He has IEP for class work. At the beginning of the school year I have to go to each teacher and explain him....I do this because I know they will become fraustrated very soon....I asked the school Diagnotian to have an ard or just a conf. at the beginning of school to avoid this...She said she likes to wait after the first 6 weeks....He failed last six weeks in some classes and now its 12 weeks and still no ard....Now, I have to do most of the work with his teachers individually...I personally dont know why I have to do this. I am very tired of dealing with this... He brings home his progress report which I did not sign....today brought home another one which I dont think I am going to sign as well.... My question is should I refuse to sign it with a note saying until he has an ARD or meeting that involves teachers etc....I will not sign because I have asked and explained that we need to meet. |

Hi, really good site. Just wanted to let you guys know about a game called "The Typing of the Dead". You could probably get it on eBay pretty cheap. Probably help with your typing skills quite a lot and is fun to play. I am currently researching a way to integrate treatment for dyslexia into video games. |

Hi Great as far as it goes but you do not go into the underlying causes of the dyslexic symproms, such as Mears Irlen Syndrome of Auditory Processing Disorder. May be have a look at the APDUK web site, and then you can really start getting to grips one of the many underlying causes of the dyslexic symptoms |

Touch Type Read and Spell is a typing programme for dyslexics that also helps with learning to spell. My son did this when he was 9. He did not find it easy! You can buy the software to do it at home but I think it might be better to do it at a centre with other children. The Britsh Dyskexia Asociation used to run one in Nottingham. |

I run a support centre at a primary school where I have the privilege of teaching a number of pupils with dyslexia. I hold drop-in sessions for parents in the local area and was wondering what experience some of the people using your site have had with support centres. Have they been useful to you and your parents? How did you find out about them? What was good/bad about them? Thanks! |

What a fantastic site you have. I have been researching dyslexia for a few years and have also worked with dyslexic students at University. I am currently trying to ensure that adults are assessed and looking at the best way of assessing dyslexia and will be presenting my results later this week. I am going to direct my audience to your site. Good luck to you all - follow your dreams - and have faith in yourself - your hard work will pay off - never say can't and never accept it from anyone else. |

do you not find it really degrading when your teachers just put SPELLING in big red letters all over your page! i know its their job but it really hurts me when ever other letter is underlined!! i do have this one teacher who works with dyslexic kids and she has helped me so much and i have managed to move up two sets in english so it can be done! and dont let it get in the way with other subjets! as long as you try your best with your reading and writing you will improve! i used to be really bad but now i am getting so much better!! |

Your site is brilliant. I would like to know if dyslexic kids would find a handheld computer - something about the size of a Nintendo gameboy, but with bigger screens - that came with programs like spell checks, etc., - the programs you recommend, already installed - helpful. I think laptops are great, but if you could shrink it, to fit in your pocket, would that be better? (Plus have some good games)... If anyone is interested in telling me what they would like to see on such a device, please contact me. |

Hi I've found this website very helpful, I was only diagnosed with dyslexia 2 years ago when I started college, before then I often considerd myself as dumb. The first school I went to wasn't really helpful I dont remember much about it, but I remember finding maths classes a waste of time and I never learnt how to swim when we went swimming. I then moved house and I had a better education, reading and spelling became easier and I learnt to swim. however my last school wasnt much help I found mock exams good and i passed them but when it came to my finals I failed them badly! now I'm at college and college really helped me and I was diagnosed with dyslexia there. The first year at college I did an art course, now im doing a graphic design course and I have a support teacher to help me through it, I didnt like the help at first I thought it was unnecessary to have help all the time, but now I have gotton used to it and I consider them as friends. This year I took my english exam for key skills I had extra time and passed. Now I have just started my driving lessons I've managed to do most of the basics but ive only had 3 lessons but I am coping and my teacher is really nice he has a laugh with me when i go wrong and he takes me on different roads to get used to it. |

I think its really cool you did this. I know being a younger sib. of someone who's dyslexic can be hard. I looked up my sisters name and saw she had posted on this site when she was 10, I just showed her this, she's 15 now. She came over and held her mouth. she couldn't believe how much of a change in her writing. But I just wanted to thank you for all this. I know that these people are blessed. no matter what. Thank you and God bless |

I've just finished my college course and received offers to go to university to study music. This is really to all the parents that read this site. If you have a younger son or daughter ask what type of help is available and apply for everything. I found that applying for everything i managed to get more help than what would have been given to me. If you don't question you won't find that there are lots of different pieces of equipment that are not widely known but do exist. If your in the same boat as me going to university or college as soon as you get to uni or college find the support office and get it help arranged as soon as you can. It saves the problem of falling behind as soon as you arrive at a course. At college i had access to people to proof read my work, a laptop to work on in classes and also voice activated word processor to do essay and course work. There is plenty of help out there and i'm glad i asked for it, it helps so much. |

I find it hard to find free support on getting an official diagnoses for my dyslexia, I have been told officialy I am Dyslexic and have ADHD but this was by a organisation to help get rid of dyslexia (Which I can't afford) and they don't give you anything specific as proof. I want to go back to college and study IT but need something official and FREE - where or who can I contact for this? |

Reply to Darren - if you think you are dyslexic go and speak to someone at uni. Tell them your difficulties and ask for an assessment. There is help out there. I had my son diagnosed when he was 7. We got help for him & he's doing O.K. - sitting his GCSEs & AS maths as we speak! The help he got from a super private tutor encouraged me to train to help other dyslexics & it was during that time that I realised that I might be dyslexic too. I went for an assessment. It was liberating. I felt such relief that there was a reason for my lack of academic success - I wasn't as lucky as my son - no help for me at school & I suffered from low self esteem as a result. Not any more though! I really hope you get help soon. Don't suffer in silence like I did. |

Well done to u! you can odviously see that sharing thoughts and feelings about your dyslexia can help lighten the burden. I am a third year student nurse in my last few months of the course. I found about my dyslexia in 2003 when i failed my first yr due to an unreadable assignment and it was a further year and a half before my funding was approved to help with my theory work. I have changed drastically as a person since i was diagnosed as my confidence has grown. I am not at all embarassed about my dyslexia as it makes me who i am, and i think it makes me more sympathetic towards others. Although i dont feel the frustration towards the teachers that called me lazy, threw me in the d stream and made me a unhappy child and an angry teenager will ever go away, but when i was little it wasnt really a well known disability. I am well liked in my clinical placements due to my friendly nature and willingness to learn although recently extra pressure has been put on me because of my difficulty with mathematics and care planning which wouldnt have been such an issue if i had been diagnosed earlier. But thanks to a supportive mentor i am over coming my problems. My advice to anyone scared to take the step just go for it. Yes it has been the toughest three yrs of my live but if i pass it will also be the most rewarding. If you want something that bad then with hard work and determination it can be achieved. good luck to all and i will let you all know if i pass fingers crossed. |

I hope that the desk will swallow me up. I get help but i wish i could have a brain transplant. I reverse my numbers and have huge difficulty in maths especially. Does anyone have any tips on how to revise? Please. |

hi there i'm person who's got worst dyslexic you can get. i didn't talk normail until i was 7, the teacher told me that i would never read, write in my life. people made fun of me because i wasn't like a normal person. i told myself that one day i would read and write like a normal person can and guess what i can now, i showed those teachers if i put my mind to it i would be able to do. right now i'm resitting my maths and english in gcse, doing public serive in gcse and i going to have a four B in it and i'm also doing welsh back in school. and the welsh don't give help to dyslexics, so most of my work is about me and dyslexia and one day they will know there are about one in ten people who have got dyslexia. |

since i've been coming on this site i haven't felt the odd one out. i have just done SATs so for anyone who is going to have them next year don't worry about them. just walk into class and pretend its a normal lesson. try your best (and ask your teacher if you can have a party at the end of the week - it should help you get through it.) |

I got diagnosed with dyslexia last year at the age of 34. At first it helped me understand why I did every day things slightly differently to everyone else, but then it made me sad when the educational psychologist said my dyslexia was so obvious he was surprised I had not been referred to one early. I also did a nursing course and struggled, at one point I was reduced to tears because I could not work out the maths formula for drugs calculations. It's taken me a year to get use to knowing that I'm dyslexic. Some people have been understanding about the condition, but some people wrongly link and are surprised that I can read & write. The big advantage about being dyslexic is that it means you do things in a more creative way and at times not being frightened of doing something in a more original way. |
